False cognates (Portuguese and Spanish)

Postby Joao Paulo » January 5th, 2008 2:54 am

About the forum Max created (All about Portuguese) and in response of what was previously discussed in the comments, I am posting here a short list of some words that can cause some confusion in these two languages.

• acordarse (S) - lembrar-se(P) - to remember (E)
• despertar (S) - despertar or acordar (P) - to wake up (E)

• apellido (S) - sobrenome (P) - last name (E)
• apodo (S) - apelido (P) - nickname (E)

• contestar (S) - responder (P) - to answer (E)
• contrariar (S) - contrariar or contestar (P) - to oppose (E)

• embarazada (S) - grávida (P) - pregnant (E)
• avergonzada (S) - envergonhada or embarassada (P) - embarrassed (E)

• exquisito (S) - delicioso (P) - delicious (E)
• extraño (S) - estranho or esquisito (P) - strange (E)
• extrañar (S) - sentir saudades (P) - to miss (E)

• esposas (S) - algemas (P) - handcuffs (E)
• esposa (S) - esposa (P) - wife (E)

• oficina (S) - escritório (P) - office (E)
• taller (S) - oficina (P) - mechanic garage (E)
• cubiertos (S) - talheres (P) - kitchen utensils (E)

• rubio (S) - loiro (P) - blond (E)
• pelirrojo (S) - ruivo (P) - red haired person (E)

Well, I think that's enough for now.

This is just to give an idea of those "confusing" words xavi was talking about!

¡Saludos!

Last year a boy said "Yo soy embarazado" during a Spanish oral. The class erupted into laughter.
