I read somewhere that Salsa dancing (mambo) is one of the most popular exports of Latin America. Originating in New York City during the 1960's, Salsa has become a worldwide phenomenon. Being from New York, I was exposed to Salsa from a young age. I was shocked to see the difference when I moved to Costa Rica. Just like Spanish. Salsa in Costa Rica took on a regional form. Here is a link to one of the most popular dance schools in Costa Rica. It is called Merecumbé and it has campuses located all around the country. If you find yourself in CR, this is an excellent way to meet locals as well as other gringos spending time in the country.

I took up Salsa a while back, and I love it. The funny thing is though, most of the people I know prefer to dance the Cumbia, Merengue or Bachata.

That just means I have more to learn, and another excuse to get out on the dance floor.

Hey Rodney!
For me, Salsa is always king. I thought I knew most Latin dances until I came to Costa Rica. I grew up dancing Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata (all of these dances originated in the Caribbean) but when I saw Cumbia (Columbia) for the first time I was floored. That dance is also known as 'swing' and is a workout and half! While learning I actually pulled my calf muscle! It is a hard dance to learn but once you do...man, it is impressive. I have a friend who is a dance teacher and he can dance cumbia with two girls at the same time! I don't know about you but for me that is a definite incentive to learn more!
