Explaining Allergies in Mexico |
An allergy is a condition that will be with you even during your vacations, and there’s always the risk of encountering the cause of your allergy. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to explain your allergy or allergies to others, in Spanish. |
In Spanish, “I’m allergic to this product” is: |
Soy alérgico a este producto. |
Let’s break it down: |
(slow) Soy a-lér-gi-co a es-te pro-duc-to. |
Once more: |
Soy alérgico a este producto. |
The first word Soy is a form of the verb “to be”. |
(slow) Soy. |
Soy. |
The second word alérgico means “allergic”. |
(slow) A-lér-gi-co. |
alérgico. |
Next we have a which means “to”. It’s followed by the words este producto, which are translated as “this product”. |
(slow) a es-te pro-duc-to |
a este producto |
Let’s hear the expression again: |
Soy alérgico a este producto. |
If you’re a woman, you should say alérgica instead of alérgico. |
While you are saying this phrase, you should point at the product that causes your allergy. |
If you have a gluten allergy, the phrase will sound like this - |
Soy alérgico al gluten. |
Let’s break it down: |
(slow) Soy a-lér-gi-co al glu-ten. |
Once more: |
Soy alérgico al gluten. |
This means “I am allergic to gluten”. |
In this sentence, first we have Soy alérgico, which means “I am allergic”. |
Then we have the word al, that in English means “to the”. |
The last word, gluten, as you may have guessed, means “gluten”. |
(slow) gluten |
gluten |
Let’s hear that again: Soy alérgico al gluten. |
If during your trip to Mexico, you visit some city close to the ocean, one of the main ingredients in any restaurant would be seafood. So if you’re allergic to it, remember the next sentence. |
First is the Spanish word for “seafood”, which is: mariscos. |
(slow) ma-ris-cos |
mariscos |
“I’m allergic to seafood” is: |
Soy alérgico a los mariscos. |
Let’s hear it one more time slowly: |
(slow) Soy a-lér-gi-co a los ma-ris-cos. |
Soy alérgico a los mariscos. |
To close out today's lessons, we’d like you to practice what you have just learned. I’ll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !buena suerte! which means “Good luck!” in Spanish. |
“I’m allergic to this product.” - Soy alérgico a este producto. |
“I’m allergic to gluten.” - Soy alérgico al gluten. |
“I’m allergic to seafood.” - Soy alérgico a los mariscos. |
Alright! That's going to do it for this lesson. Hasta luego. |
