Eric: Expressions that Involve Tools
Eric: Hi everyone, and welcome back to SpanishPod101.com. I'm Eric.
Anna: And I'm Anna!
Eric: This is Must-Know Spanish Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 18. In this lesson you'll learn Expressions that Involve Tools.
Eric: Daily tools can also be a subject of our expressions, and here you'll see that they can take on a different meaning in a new context.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Eric: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Anna: ponerse las pilas
Anna: irse la olla
Anna: ponerse las botas
Anna: ser un tapón
Eric: Anna, what's our first expression?
Anna: ponerse las pilas
Eric: literally meaning "to put the batteries on you." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "to smarten up."
Anna: [SLOW] ponerse las pilas [NORMAL] ponerse las pilas
Eric: Listeners, please repeat.
Anna: ponerse las pilas

Eric: Use this slang expression when somebody is procrastinating and suddenly rushes to finish something. That change is when you have your "full batteries" and you do everything faster.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Si quieres acabar el curso bien, tendrás que ponerte las pilas. [SLOW] Si quieres acabar el curso bien, tendrás que ponerte las pilas.
Eric: "If you want to finish the course well, you have to work harder."

Eric: Okay, what's the next expression?
Anna: irse la olla
Eric: literally meaning "the pot goes away." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "to lose your mind."

Eric: Use this slang expression when somebody starts doing crazy things. Think of the

Eric: "pot," as the mind that we lose. It can also be used when you forget something.

Anna: [NORMAL] Se le fue la olla y se bañó en el mar en pleno invierno. [SLOW] Se le fue la olla y se bañó en el mar en pleno invierno.
Eric: "He lost his mind and went to the sea in the middle of winter."

Eric: Okay, what's our next expression?

Eric: literally meaning "to put oneself the boots." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "to eat a lot."
Anna: [SLOW] ponerse las botas [NORMAL] ponerse las botas

Eric: Use this slang expression when someone is eating a delicious and big meal.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] El restaurante era tan barato que nos pusimos las botas comiendo. [SLOW] El restaurante era tan barato que nos pusimos las botas comiendo.
Eric: "The restaurant was so cheap that we ate a lot."
Anna: [NORMAL] El restaurante era tan barato que nos pusimos las botas comiendo.
Eric: Okay, what's the last expression?
Anna: ser un tapón
Eric: literally meaning "to be a bottle cap." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to be really short."
Anna: [SLOW] ser un tapón [NORMAL] ser un tapón

Eric: Use this slang expression when describing someone who is really short. Be careful when you use this expression as it's not really nice for the short people to know that you are calling them that. However, it's okay to make jokes about size with your friends.

Anna: [NORMAL] El otro día un tapón intentó ligar conmigo. [SLOW] El otro día un tapón intentó ligar conmigo.
Eric: "The other day a really short guy tried to flirt with me."
