Eric: Expressions with the Verb Ir
Eric: Hi everyone, and welcome back to SpanishPod101.com. I'm Eric.
Anna: And I'm Anna!
Eric: This is Must-Know Spanish Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 16. In this lesson you'll learn Expressions with the Verb Ir.
Eric: See the different meanings that this verb can get by just changing the words that follow.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Eric: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Anna: ir a tu bola
Anna: ir de buenas
Anna: ir a toda pastilla
Anna: ir de sobrado
Eric: Anna, what's our first expression?
Anna: ir a tu bola
Eric: literally meaning "go to your ball." But when used as a slang expression it means "do what one wants, mess around."
Anna: [SLOW] ir a tu bola [NORMAL] ir a tu bola
Eric: Listeners, please repeat.
Anna: ir a tu bola
[pause - 5 sec.]
Eric: Use this slang expression when somebody does whatever they want or is messing around. For example, you're in the middle of a match and you don't listen to the coach’s instructions.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Andrea siempre va a su bola. [SLOW] Andrea siempre va a su bola.
Eric: "Andrea always does whatever she wants."
Anna: [NORMAL] Andrea siempre va a su bola.
Eric: Okay, what's the next expression?
Anna: ir de buenas
Eric: literally meaning "go of goods." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to try to seem nice."
Anna: [SLOW] ir de buenas [NORMAL] ir de buenas
Eric: Listeners, please repeat.
Anna: ir de buenas
[pause - 5 sec.]
Eric: Use this slang expression when you feel that somebody is overreacting, or being too nice. Also, when somebody who, before, didn't seem too cooperative, but has suddenly changed.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Manuel va de buenas, pero sé que trama algo. [SLOW] Manuel va de buenas, pero sé que trama algo.
Eric: "Manuel tries to be nice, but I know that he has something in mind."
Anna: [NORMAL] Manuel va de buenas, pero sé que trama algo.
Eric: Okay, what's our next expression?
Anna: ir a toda pastilla
Eric: literally meaning "to go at every pill." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "to go very fast."
Anna: [SLOW] ir a toda pastilla [NORMAL] ir a toda pastilla

Eric: Use this slang expression when somebody is doing something very fast.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Si quieres llegar a tiempo, tienes que ir a toda pastilla. [SLOW] Si quieres llegar a tiempo, tienes que ir a toda pastilla.
Eric: "If you want to be on time, you have to go very fast."
Anna: [NORMAL] Si quieres llegar a tiempo, tienes que ir a toda pastilla.
Eric: Okay, what's the last expression?
Anna: ir de sobrado
Eric: literally meaning "go left over." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "to be full of oneself, narcissistic."
Anna: [SLOW] ir de sobrado [NORMAL] ir de sobrado
Eric: Listeners, please repeat.
Anna: ir de sobrado

Eric: Use this slang expression when you want to talk about somebody who is very egocentric and full of himself. It can be used to describe people who think they are better than others.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] José va de sobrado por la vida, pero en realidad no sabe nada. [SLOW] José va de sobrado por la vida, pero en realidad no sabe nada.
Eric: "José is full of himself, but in fact he doesn't know anything."
Anna: [NORMAL] José va de sobrado por la vida, pero en realidad no sabe nada.
