Eric: Hi everyone, and welcome back to SpanishPod101.com. I'm Eric.

Eric: This is Must-Know Spanish Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 14. In this lesson you'll learn Idiomatic Expressions with Unusual Literal Translations.

SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Eric: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Anna: empanado
Anna: ser uña y carne
Anna: tener mala leche
Anna: pillar con las manos en la masa
Eric: Anna, what's our first expression?
Anna: empanado
Eric: literally meaning "to be breaded." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "to be spaced out, to be out of it."
Anna: [SLOW] empanado [NORMAL] empanado
Eric: Listeners, please repeat.

Eric: Use this slang expression when somebody is not paying attention to somebody or something.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Estaba tan dormida que me empané toda la clase. [SLOW] Estaba tan dormida que me empané toda la clase.
Eric: "I was so sleepy that I was spaced out for the entire class."

Eric: Okay, what's the next expression?

Eric: literally meaning "be nail and meat." But when used as a slang expression it means "be good buddies, thick as thieves, to be tight."

Eric: Use this slang expression when you talk about two people that are always together, as close as a nail and the nailbed.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Nuria y Ana son uña y carne. [SLOW] Nuria y Ana son uña y carne.
Eric: "Nuria and Ana are really tight."
Anna: [NORMAL] Nuria y Ana son uña y carne.
Eric: Okay, what's the next expression?
Anna: tener mala leche
Eric: literally meaning "having bad milk." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "be in a bad mood, be angry."
Anna: [SLOW] tener mala leche [NORMAL] tener mala leche
Eric: Listeners, please repeat.
Anna: tener mala leche

Eric: Use this slang expression when somebody is so angry that they take it out on everybody. Be careful when you use this word because if the person in the bad mood hears it, he or she could even become angrier.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Vigila con Nuria que cuando saca la mala leche no hay quien hable con ella. [SLOW] Vigila con Nuria que cuando saca la mala leche no hay quien hable con ella.
Eric: "Be careful with Nuria because when she is in a bad mood nobody can talk with her."
Anna: [NORMAL] Vigila con Nuria que cuando saca la mala leche no hay quien hable con ella.
Eric: Okay, what's the last expression?
Anna: pillar con las manos en la masa
Eric: literally meaning "catch someone with their hands in the dough." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "to catch someone red-handed."

Eric: Use this slang expression when you find somebody doing something she or he shouldn't be doing. It can also be used when people hide something or try to avoid being seen by others.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Los pillé con las manos en la masa, ¡copiando en el examen! [SLOW] Los pillé con las manos en la masa, ¡copiando en el examen!
Eric: "I caught them red-handed, cheating on the exam!"
