INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Alex: And I'm Alex. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 9. Asking for information about something. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking for information about something. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, |
Eric: "What do you want for your birthday? " |
Alex: ¿Qué quieres para tu cumpleaños? |
Alex: [slow] ¿Qué quieres para tu cumpleaños? |
Eric: The pattern for asking for information about something has 3 elements. First, "What". |
Alex: Qué. |
Eric: Second, the conjugated verb, "do you want". |
Alex: quieres. |
Eric: Third, the complement, "for your birthday". |
Alex: para tu cumpleaños. |
Eric: Altogether, we have.."What do you want for your birthday? " |
Alex: ¿Qué quieres para tu cumpleaños? [slow] ¿Qué quieres para tu cumpleaños? [normal] ¿Qué quieres para tu cumpleaños? |
Eric: Start with the word "what", followed by a verb conjugated in the past, present, or future, which demonstrates to whom you are referring. Pay attention to the conjugation as it will show to whom you are referring and not to whom you are talking. At the end you can add more details about the information you want; it can be another verb, adverb, noun, and so on. |
Alex: ¿Qué quieres para tu cumpleaños? |
Eric: So remember that to ask for information about something, start with the word "what", followed by a conjugated verb, and a complement for more details. |
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "What do I buy to eat for dinner?" First, "What". |
Alex: Qué. |
Eric: Second, a conjugated verb, "do I buy". |
Alex: compro. |
Eric: Third, a complement, "to eat for dinner". |
Alex: para cenar. |
Eric: Altogether we have.. |
Alex: ¿Qué compro para cenar? [slow] ¿Qué compro para cenar? [normal] ¿Qué compro para cenar? |
Eric: "What do I buy to eat for dinner?" |
[pause] |
Alex: ¿Qué compro para cenar? |
Eric: How do you say - "What do you do on Sundays?" To give you a hint, "Sundays" is.. |
Alex: los domingos. [slow] los domingos. [normal] los domingos. |
Eric: What do you do on Sundays? |
[pause] |
Alex: ¿Qué haces los domingos? [slow] ¿Qué haces los domingos? [normal] ¿Qué haces los domingos? |
[pause] |
Alex: ¿Qué haces los domingos? |
