INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Alex: And I'm Alex. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 8. Requesting that someone refrain from doing something. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for requesting that someone refrain from doing something. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, |
Eric: "Don't park your car here." |
Alex: No estaciones tu carro aquí. |
Alex: [slow] No estaciones tu carro aquí. |
Eric: The pattern for requesting that someone refrain from doing something has 3 elements. First comes the adverb, "don't." |
Alex: Which is No. |
Eric: Second, the verb in the present subjunctive, "park," conjugated in the second person singular form. |
Alex: estaciones. |
Eric: Third, the complement, "your car here." |
Alex: tu carro aquí. |
Eric: Altogether, we have.."Don't park your car here." |
Alex: No estaciones tu carro aquí. [slow] No estaciones tu carro aquí. [normal] No estaciones tu carro aquí. |
Eric: A pronoun will not be necessary as the verb conjugation will demonstrate to whom you are talking. First you start with the word "don't" to request someone to refrain from doing the verb that follows it. After the verb, add more details of what they shouldn't do or why. |
Alex: No estaciones tu carro aquí. |
Eric: So remember that to request that someone refrain from doing something, first use the word "don't", plus a verb in its present subjunctive, and add a complement for more details. |
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Don't touch anything." First the adverb, "don't". |
Alex: No. |
Eric: Second, the verb in the present subjunctive, "touch," conjugated in the second person plural form. |
Alex: toquen. |
Eric: Third, the complement, "anything." |
Alex: nada. |
Eric: Altogether we have.. |
Alex: No toquen nada. [slow] No toquen nada. [normal] No toquen nada. |
Eric: "Don't touch anything." |
[pause] |
Alex: No toquen nada. |
Eric: How do you say - "Don't run in the hallway?" To give you a hint, "hallway" is.. |
Alex: pasillo. [slow] pasillo. [normal] pasillo. |
Eric: Don't run in the hallway. |
[pause] |
Alex: No corras en el pasillo. [slow] No corras en el pasillo. [normal] No corras en el pasillo. |
[pause] |
Alex: No corras en el pasillo. |
