INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Alex: And I'm Alex. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 6. Talking about something in the past. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about something in the past. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, |
Eric: "I went to the beach on Sunday." |
Alex: Yo fui a la playa el domingo. |
Alex: [slow] Yo fui a la playa el domingo. |
Eric: The pattern for talking about something in the past has three elements. First comes the pronoun, "I." |
Alex: Yo. |
Eric: Second is the verb in preterite, "went," conjugated in the first person singular form. |
Alex: fui. |
Eric: Third is the complement, "to the beach on Sunday." |
Alex: a la playa el domingo. |
Eric: Altogether, we have.."I went to the beach on Sunday." |
Alex: Yo fui a la playa el domingo. [slow] Yo fui a la playa el domingo. [normal] Yo fui a la playa el domingo. |
Eric: First use a pronoun, which can be replaced by a proper noun or any other subject, then follow it with a verb in its preterite form. Make sure to conjugate the verb according to the subject. The complement can be anything that gives more details of what someone or something has done in the past - noun, noun phrase, adjective, or adverb. |
Alex: Yo fui a la playa el domingo. |
Eric: So remember that to talk about something in the past, first give the subject, plus a verb in its preterite form, and add a complement for more details. |
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "You worked late." First comes the pronoun, "You." |
Alex: Tú. |
Eric: Second is the verb in the preterite, "worked," conjugated in the second person singular form. |
Alex: trabajaste. |
Eric: Third is the complement, "late." Literally "until late." |
Alex: hasta tarde. |
Eric: Altogether we have.. |
Alex: Tú trabajaste hasta tarde. [slow] Tú trabajaste hasta tarde. [normal] Tú trabajaste hasta tarde. |
Eric: "You worked late." |
[pause] |
Alex: Tú trabajaste hasta tarde. |
Eric: How do you say - "We created a robot." To give you a hint, "a robot" is.. |
Alex: un robot. [slow] un robot. [normal] un robot. |
Eric: We created a robot. |
[pause] |
Alex: Nosotros creamos un robot. [slow] Nosotros creamos un robot. [normal] Nosotros creamos un robot. |
[pause] |
Alex: Nosotros creamos un robot. |
