| Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |

| Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 24. Using Reported Speech. |
| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for reporting something said by someone else. |
| PATTERN |
| Eric: For example, "You said that she would come. " |
| Alex: Tú dijiste que ella vendría. |
| Alex: [slow] Tú dijiste que ella vendría. |
| Eric: The pattern for reporting something said by someone else has 4 elements. First, the pronoun "you." |
| Alex: Tú. |
| Eric: Second, the verb in preterite indicative. In this example, "said." |
| Alex: dijiste. |
| Eric: Third, "that." |
| Alex: que. |
| Eric: And last, the clause "she would come." |
| Alex: ella vendría. |
| Eric: Altogether, we have... "You said that she would come." |
| Alex: Tú dijiste que ella vendría. [slow] Tú dijiste que ella vendría. [normal] Tú dijiste que ella vendría. |
| Eric: When saying that someone said something, first say the verb "to say," or |
| Alex: decir. |
| Eric: It should be conjugated in its preterite indicative form, according to the pronoun. Then comes the conjunction "that." |
| Alex: que |
| Eric: And at the end, add the clause stating what someone said. You can emphasize who said the statement by beginning with the pronoun, but otherwise it can be omitted. |
| Alex: Tú dijiste que ella vendría. |
| Eric: So remember: To report something said by someone, start with a pronoun if you want to emphasize whoever was speaking, the add the verb "to say" in preterite indicative form, followed by the conjunction "that" |
| Alex: que |
| Eric: and finally, end with the clause stating what someone said. |
| Eric: Here’s another example saying, "He said he didn't want to." First, the pronoun "he." |
| Alex: Él. |
| Eric: Second, the verb in preterite indicative "said." |
| Alex: dijo. |
| Eric: Third, "that." |
| Alex: que. |
| Eric: And last, the clause "he didn't want to." |
| Alex: no quería. |
| Eric: Altogether we have... |
| Alex: Él dijo que no quería. [slow] Él dijo que no quería. [normal] Él dijo que no quería. |
| Eric: "He said he didn't want to." |
| [pause] |
| Alex: Él dijo que no quería. |
| Eric: How do you say - "She said that she will come tomorrow." To give you a hint, "she will come tomorrow" is... |
| Alex: vendrá mañana. [slow] vendrá mañana. [normal] vendrá mañana. |
| Eric: "She said that she will come tomorrow." |
| [pause] |
| Alex: Ella dijo que vendrá mañana. [slow] Ella dijo que vendrá mañana. [normal] Ella dijo que vendrá mañana. |
