INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Alex: And I'm Alex. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 23. The Verb "to Hope." |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing things you hope will happen. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, "I hope (that) you win the contest. " |
Alex: Espero que ganes el concurso. |
Alex: [slow] Espero que ganes el concurso. |
Eric: The pattern for expressing hope has 4 elements. First, "I hope." |
Alex: Espero. |
Eric: Second, "that." |
Alex: que. |
Eric: Third, a verb in present subjunctive. In this case, "you win." |
Alex: ganes. |
Eric: And last, the complement "the contest." |
Alex: el concurso. |
Eric: Altogether, we have... "I hope (that) you win the contest. " |
Alex: Espero que ganes el concurso. [slow] Espero que ganes el concurso. [normal] Espero que ganes el concurso. |
Eric: Start with the verb meaning "I hope." |
Alex: espero |
Eric: Followed by the conjunction "that." |
Alex: que |
Eric: Then add a verb in the present subjunctive form. You can add more details at the end by putting another verb, noun, or phrase. |
Alex: Espero que ganes el concurso. |
Eric: So remember: To express your hope that something will happen, start with the phrase "I hope that.” In Spanish, that’s… |
Alex: Espero que |
Eric: Then add a verb in the present subjunctive, and finish with a complement. |
Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "I hope (that) you find what you are looking for." First, "I hope." |
Alex: Espero. |
Eric: Second, "that." |
Alex: que. |
Eric: Third, the verb in the present subjunctive "you find." |
Alex: encuentres. |
Eric: And last, the complement "what you are looking for." |
Alex: lo que buscas. |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Alex: Espero que encuentres lo que buscas. [slow] Espero que encuentres lo que buscas. [normal] Espero que encuentres lo que buscas. |
Eric: "I hope (that) you find what you are looking for." |
[pause] |
Alex: Espero que encuentres lo que buscas. |
Eric: How do you say - "I hope (that) you come to the party." To give you a hint, "you come to the party " is... |
Alex: vengas a la fiesta. [slow] vengas a la fiesta. [normal] vengas a la fiesta. |
Eric: "I hope (that) you come to the party." |
[pause] |
Alex: Espero que vengas a la fiesta. [slow] Espero que vengas a la fiesta. [normal] Espero que vengas a la fiesta. |
[pause] |
