| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for explaining the cause or reason for an action or condition. |
| PATTERN |
| Eric: For example, "I leave early today because it is a holiday. " |
| Alex: Salgo temprano hoy porque es día festivo. |
| Alex: [slow] Salgo temprano hoy porque es día festivo. |
| Eric: The pattern for explaining the cause or reason for an action or condition has 3 elements. First, clause A. In this case, "I leave early today." |
| Alex: Salgo temprano hoy. |
| Eric: Second, "because." |
| Alex: porque. |
| Eric: Third, clause B. "It is a holiday." |
| Alex: es día festivo. |
| Eric: Altogether, we have... "I leave early today because it is a holiday. " |
| Alex: Salgo temprano hoy porque es día festivo. [slow] Salgo temprano hoy porque es día festivo. [normal] Salgo temprano hoy porque es día festivo. |
| Eric: When explaining the cause or reason for something, first state the resulting action or condition (Clause A). Then, comes the word "because," or... |
| Alex: porque |
| Eric: after which, add clause B. This is the reason why the action or condition in the first clause was reached. Note that both clauses contain conjugated verbs in the present tense. |
| Alex: Salgo temprano hoy porque es día festivo. |
| Eric: So remember: To explain the cause or reason for an action or condition, first introduce the resulting condition in Clause A, add "because" |
| Alex: porque |
| Eric: to connect it to the reason stated in Clause B. |
| Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "I'm angry because you don't listen to me." First, clause A. "I'm angry." |
| Alex: Estoy enojada. |
| Eric: Second, "because." |
| Alex: porque. |
| Eric: Third, clause B. "You don't listen to me." |
| Alex: no me escuchas. |
| Eric: Altogether we have... |
| Alex: Estoy enojada porque no me escuchas. [slow] Estoy enojada porque no me escuchas. [normal] Estoy enojada porque no me escuchas. |
| Eric: "I'm angry because you don't listen to me." |

| Eric: How do you say - "The dog is fat because it eats all day." To give you a hint, "eats all day" is... |
| Alex: come todo el día. [slow] come todo el día. [normal] come todo el día. |
