| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing what you want. |
| PATTERN |
| Eric: For example, |
| Eric: "I want a clay pot coffee." |
| Alex: Yo quiero un café de olla. |
| Alex: [slow] Yo quiero un café de olla. |
| Eric: The pattern for expressing what you want has 3 elements. First, a pronoun, in this case "I." |
| Alex: Yo. |
| Eric: Second, the verb "to want" conjugated in the first person singular. |
| Alex: quiero. |
| Eric: Third, a noun phrase, in this case "a clay pot coffee..." |
| Alex: un café de olla. |
| Eric: Altogether, we have.."I want a clay pot coffee." |
| Alex: Yo quiero un café de olla. [slow] Yo quiero un café de olla. [normal] Yo quiero un café de olla. |
| Eric: In Spanish, the pronoun can be omitted if it is obvious to whom you are referring. But if you want to emphasize, you can include the pronoun at the beginning of the sentence. Then comes the verb "to want," conjugated according to the pronoun. At the end comes the noun phrase expressing what it is that you want. The noun phrase is modified by the gender and number of the noun. |
| Alex: Yo quiero un café de olla. |
| Eric: So remember that to express what you want, say "I", plus the verb “to want", plus a noun phrase. Be aware of the number and gender of the noun. |
| Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I want a piñata." First is the pronoun, in this case "I." |
| Alex: Yo. |
| Eric: Second, the verb "to want." |
| Alex: quiero. |
| Eric: Third, a noun phrase, in this case "a piñata.." |
| Alex: una piñata. |
| Eric: Altogether we have.. |
| Alex: Yo quiero una piñata. [slow] Yo quiero una piñata. [normal] Yo quiero una piñata. |
| Eric: "I want a piñata." |

| Alex: Yo quiero una piñata. |
| Eric: How do you say - "I want two hamburgers"? To give you a hint, "two hamburgers" is.. |
| Alex: dos hamburguesas. [slow] dos hamburguesas. [normal] dos hamburguesas. |
| Eric: I want two hamburgers. |

| Alex: Yo quiero dos hamburguesas. [slow] Yo quiero dos hamburguesas. [normal] Yo quiero dos hamburguesas. |
