Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for describing something that needs to be done. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, "You have to finish the homework. " |
Alex: Tienes que terminar la tarea. |
Alex: [slow] Tienes que terminar la tarea. |
Eric: The pattern for describing something that needs to be done has 3 elements. First, "You have to." |
Alex: Tienes que. |
Eric: Second, the verb in infinitive form "finish." |
Alex: terminar. |
Eric: Third, the complement "the homework." |
Alex: la tarea. |
Eric: Altogether, we have... "You have to finish the homework. " |
Alex: Tienes que terminar la tarea. [slow] Tienes que terminar la tarea. [normal] Tienes que terminar la tarea. |
Eric: Start with the phrase “You have to.” In Spanish, this is… |
Alex: Tienes que |
Eric: The verb "have" is conjugated in the second person singular. The pronoun "you" is implied in its conjugation. Next, add a verb in its infinitive form. At the end, you can give details by adding a noun, an adverb, or a phrase. |
Alex: Tienes que terminar la tarea. |
Eric: So remember: To describe something that needs to be done start with the phrase... |

Eric: add an infinitive verb, and end with a complement. |
Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "You have to wash the dishes." First, "You have to." |
Alex: Tienes que. |
Eric: Second, the verb in infinitive form "wash." |

Eric: Third, the complement. "The dishes." |
Alex: los platos. |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
