INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Alex: And I'm Alex.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 14. Asking About Manner.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern to ask how something was done, or the manner in which it was done.
PATTERN
Eric: For example, "How was the movie?"
Alex: ¿Cómo estuvo la película?
Alex: [slow] ¿Cómo estuvo la película?
Eric: The pattern for asking about manner has 3 elements. First, "How."
Alex: Cómo.
Eric: Second, the conjugated verb "was."
Alex: estuvo.
Eric: Third, the complement "the movie."
Alex: la película.
Eric: Altogether, we have... "How was the movie?"
Alex: ¿Cómo estuvo la película? [slow] ¿Cómo estuvo la película? [normal] ¿Cómo estuvo la película?
Eric: Start with the word "how." Next, follow it with the conjugated verb describing the action which you want to know more about. At the end, you can add more information that will complement the action, such as a noun, adverb, or noun phrase.
Alex: ¿Cómo estuvo la película?
Eric: So, remember: To ask about manner, begin with the word "how," followed by a conjugated verb, and end with a complement for more details.
Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "How did you get everything you needed?" First, "How."
Alex: Cómo.
Eric: Second, the conjugated verb meaning "you got."
Alex: conseguiste.
Eric: Third, the complement "everything you needed."
Alex: todo lo que necesitabas.
Eric: Altogether we have...
Alex: ¿Cómo conseguiste todo lo que necesitabas? [slow] ¿Cómo conseguiste todo lo que necesitabas? [normal] ¿Cómo conseguiste todo lo que necesitabas?
Eric: "How did you get everything you needed?"
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cómo conseguiste todo lo que necesitabas?
Eric: How do you say, "How did you arrive so early?" To give you a hint, "so early" is...
Alex: tan temprano. [slow] tan temprano. [normal] tan temprano.
Eric: "How did you arrive so early?"
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cómo llegaste tan temprano? [slow] ¿Cómo llegaste tan temprano? [normal] ¿Cómo llegaste tan temprano?
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cómo llegaste tan temprano?
