INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Alex: And I'm Alex.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 10. Asking about time.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about time.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "When does the next bus depart?"
Alex: ¿Cuándo sale el próximo autobús?
Alex: [slow] ¿Cuándo sale el próximo autobús?
Eric: The pattern for asking about time has 3 elements. First, "When."
Alex: Cuándo.
Eric: Second, a conjugated verb, "depart."
Alex: sale.
Eric: Third, a complement, "the next bus."
Alex: el próximo autobús.
Eric: Altogether, we have..."When does the next bus depart?"
Alex: ¿Cuándo sale el próximo autobús? [slow] ¿Cuándo sale el próximo autobús? [normal] ¿Cuándo sale el próximo autobús?
Eric: Start with the question word "when", followed by a conjugated verb that demonstrates who or what will be done or has already been done, and add more details to the end to complement the question.
Alex: ¿Cuándo sale el próximo autobús?
Eric: So remember to ask when an action takes place, start with the word "when", followed by a conjugated verb, and end with a complement for more details.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "When does the pizza arrive? " First, "When."
Alex: Cuándo.
Eric: Second, the conjugated verb, "arrive."
Alex: llega.
Eric: Third, the complement, "the pizza."
Alex: la pizza.
Eric: Altogether we have..
Alex: ¿Cuándo llega la pizza? [slow] ¿Cuándo llega la pizza? [normal] ¿Cuándo llega la pizza?
Eric: "When does the pizza arrive?"
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cuándo llega la pizza?
Eric: How do you say - "When will the concert start?" To give you a hint, "concert" is..
Alex: concierto. [slow] concierto. [normal] concierto.
Eric: When will the concert start?
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cuándo empezará el concierto? [slow] ¿Cuándo empezará el concierto? [normal] ¿Cuándo empezará el concierto?
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cuándo empezará el concierto?
REVIEW
Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Spanish. Here we go.
Eric: "When does the next bus depart?"
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cuándo sale el próximo autobús?
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cuándo sale el próximo autobús?
Eric: "When does the pizza arrive?"
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cuándo llega la pizza?
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cuándo llega la pizza?
Eric: "When will the concert start?"
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cuándo empezará el concierto?
[pause]
Alex: ¿Cuándo empezará el concierto?

Hola Frank,

Thank you for your comment.

Because we al taking about something we don't know. If we knew when you will have time then you can say "Cuando tengo tiempo".

Sigamos practicando!

Carla

Hola Alex y Eric,

Arriba en los ejemplos dice, "Cuando tenga tiempo (significa) "When I have time." Porque no es "Cuando tengo tiempo" en lugar de tenga?

¡Gracias y gracias otra vez para estas lecciones! Como Charon dice, ellas son muy útiles!

Frank

PD: Si ustedes contestan a me (¿O debiera ser contestan me sin la letra a?), por favor, mandeme su respuesta en un correo electrónico.

Hola Mark,

Thank you for your comment.

Both sentences are correct. Though we use the present tense in "Cuando sale el autobus?" because this will be leaving very soon so we use the present. "Cuando saldrá el autobus" refers to the bus leaving in a couple of hours or even later.

The same applies to the other sentence.

Saludos,

Carla

Hola Mark.

Gracias por tu comentario.

The correct sentence is "Cuando saldrá el proximo autobus?

As for your second questions, both can be valid to the same sentence.

Let's keep practicing!

Saludos,

Carla

#1 Cuando sale el proxima autobus? This is in the present tense

Cuando saldre el proxima autobus? Since the bus is leaving in the future wouldn't this be the correct question?

(When 'will' the next bus leave)

#2 Cuando llega la pizza? This too is in the present tense, should we not say this?

Cuando llegara la pizza? (When will the pizza arrive?)

cuando es feliz cumpleanos?

I have particularly enjoyed this series. It teaches me the stuff I really need to know which how to talk about certain things and what types of responses I could hear. I would love more of this type of information.
