You know it by identify the accent in the word.

Here are some rules that can help you.

If the word ends in n,s, or vocal the word accent is in the second to last syllable.

aCENto, paLAbra, FORma, espaÑOla, eLIjan, POlen, reSUmen, carGAdas, muJEres, etc.

If the word ends in any other consonant the last syllable is accentuated.

intensiDAD, distinGUIR, maYOR, etc.

Any other word that doesn't follow the las two statements, need to use dash in the accent syllable.

BÚS-ca-lo, SÍ-la-ba, ÁR-bol, de-MÁS, etc.

Thanks, I understand your answer, but how do we know this? I assume it doesn't apply to every verb. Is there a rule to follow? Or do we only know this after hearing the word pronounced by someone or seeing it written?

"búscalo" is "buscar + lo" , object or reflexive pronouns might be attached to the end of verb infinitives and present participles. When this is attached the word changes causing it to hace accent in the "u".

I guess I wrote my comment poorly.

Why is there an accent? When I look up a conjugation chart of buscar, I do not see any entries with accents.

thanks. anyways, the reason i came up with the idea is that japanese pod 101 gets to do all those fun stuff in the you tube channel like going to burger king with risa, the right way to eat sushi,and yesterday i saw the japanese pod 101 guys posted a halloween themed weekly words.i just feel kind of sad that japanese pod 101 gets to do all those.:disappointed:
