| In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb hacer which means "to do" in Spanish. |
| In this lesson, we will learn how to use gustar and querer. |
| Gustar means “to like” and querer “to love” in Spanish, so in this lesson we are going to see how to use it correctly. |
| Imagine you are in a restaurant with a friend, and they ask you: ¿Te gusta el queso? |
| This means "Do you like cheese?". |
| So supposing you like it you can reply Si, me gusta. ‘Y es, I like it’. |
| [slowly] Si, me gusta. |
| So let’s break down this answer. |
| First we had- |
| Si which is simply "Yes." |
| Then me which means “to me”, and gusta is “I like it”. |
| Remember that in Spanish the pronouns are omitted most of the time. |
| Then the verb gustar, and remember that before the verb you always have to put a pronoun, in this case an object pronoun. Doesn’t matter which verb you are using, whether present, past or future. |
| Me gusta / “I like.” |
| Te gusta / “You like.” |
| Le gusta / “He/She/It likes.” Nos gusta / “We like.” |
| Les gusta / “They like.” |
| Note that in Spanish we use the verb querer to express "love" towards something or someone. |
| Even if you just appreciate something, you can use querer. On the other hand, it is also the verb to use when talking about something you really love or about the person you are in love with. |
| Te quiero / “I love you”. |
| Les quiero / “I love them”. |
| Be careful! In the example you can see the same structure as the verb gustar, but that is only when I’m telling someone that I love you/him/her/it/you or them. |
| Now it’s time for Lucia’s Insights. |
| In Spanish, if you really want to insist on the fact that you love something but in an informal way, you use the verb disfrutar which is "to like"/"to enjoy" something/someone very much. |
| You can hear ¡Disfruto de las vacaciones!. This means "I enjoy the holidays!" |
