INTRODUCTION |
Fernando: What’s on today’s docket? In this lesson, you will learn how to give the time of an event. The conversation takes place in a conference room, and the conversation is between Señor Rodriguez, Jimmy, and Maru, the secretary. The speakers will be using the formal register, except between Señor Rodriguez and Jimmy. |
JP: Alright, let’s get started! |

EL SR. RODRÍGUEZ: Jimmy, te presento a Maru, ella es mi secretaria. Te va a explicar el programa de hoy. |
MARU: Hola Sr. McSherry, mucho gusto. |

POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
JP: Ok, so today Jimmy meets Sr. Rodriguez' secretary Maru. |
Fernando: His administrative assistant, you mean? |
JP: Haha, in Spanish, it's the same word "la secretaria." And she is all business, it seems. |
Fernando: Right, she lists off the agenda... 10 o’clock, coffee. 1 o’clock, everyone heads to one restaurant, 4:30 Mr. Rodriguez gives a tour of the refinery, and then takes you back to the hotel. You know what time Jimmy’s gonna get picked up? |
JP: You’re asking me? |
Fernando: Yeah. |
JP: Pick up… Something like seven thirty, right? |
Fernando: Exactly. A eso de las siete y media. that "a eso de" means "something like," or "around" seven thirty. |

Fernando: el apertivo |
JP: el apertivo... this is the little cocktail you have before dinner... very civilized. |
Fernando: Yes, l'apéritif... el apertivo. Ok, the next word is la gerencia. |
JP: La gerencia. Management. La gerencia. |
Fernando: Maru says a las 10h, café con la gerencia. |
JP: So coffee with all the managers. Coffee with managers? Most people take their coffee with cream an sugar. |
Fernando: that's great, JP. La gerencia. Ok, the next word is the verb explicar. |
JP: explicar means to explain. Explicar. |
Fernando: Not much to explain there. |
JP: No, no hay mucho para explicar... |
Fernando: Ok, the last item is a phrase... Ahora mismo. |
JP: Ahora mismo. So this means right now. Ahora means now, and when you put it with mismo, it means this very second, now now now. |
Fernando: Así es. |
Lesson focus
|
Fernando: What's our grammar point for today? |
JP: Well, it's something very simple... it's how to give the time of an event. Now we already know how to tell the time, how to say what time it is right now, but there's a different way to express times from a schedule. So we're talking about the difference between saying "it's four o'clock" and "AT four o'clock"... at four o'clock we'll go have a snack. |
Fernando: Ok, this is easy, so we say "a las cuatro." |
JP: Right, so cuatro means four, and to express four o'clock, we add the article, las. so las cuatro means four o'clock, and if you want to say AT four o'clock... |
Fernando: a las cuatro. |
JP: How about at three o'clock? |
Fernando: a las tres. |
JP: at two o'clock? |
Fernando: a las dos. |
JP: at one o'clock? |
Fernando: a la una. Remember one o'clock gets the singular "la" |
JP: A la una. Cool. |
Outro
|
Fernando: I think we’re about to wrap it up, JP. |
JP: For now, it’s time to say goodbye. Hasta luego. |
Fernando: Bye-bye! |
