It’s time for the numbers up to one thousand. |
But first, here are a few things to keep in mind. |
Remember that although one hundred is |
cien |
in Spanish, in the subsequent numbers, cien changes to ciento and is then followed by the remaining digits. For example, 101 is |
Ciento uno |
"One hundred one" |
[SLOW] Ciento uno |
Ciento uno |
and |
One hundred eighty-seven would be |
Ciento ochenta y siete. |
"One hundred eighty-seven" |
[SLOW] Ciento ochenta y siete. |
Ciento ochenta y siete. |
As you can see, it’s quite different from the English language in that hundreds are written in one word. For example, doscientos (one word) |
means "two hundred" (two words) |
[SLOW] Doscientos |
Doscientos |
But what follows is similar to English wherein there’s a space and then the next number. For example, "eight hundred forty-two" would be |
ochocientos cuarenta y dos in Spanish. |
"Eight hundred forty-two" |
[SLOW] Ochocientos cuarenta y dos |
Ochocientos cuarenta y dos |
Notice how the word "hundred" doesn't change in English, such as in one-hundred and two-hundred., but changes a little bit in Spanish. For example, for one hundred fifty-six, we’ll say |
Ciento cincuenta y seis, |
[SLOW] Ciento cincuenta y seis |
Ciento cincuenta y seis |
but for four hundred seventy, we’ll say |
Cuatrocientos setenta. |
[SLOW] Cuatrocientos setenta. |
Cuatrocientos setenta. |
As you can see, instead of ciento, we add the S at the end to make it plural when it’s more than one hundred. So it becomes cientos. |
There are times where the number in front of cientos is the same word we learned from the start. For example, |
Cuatrocientos |
"Four hundred" |
[SLOW] Cuatrocientos |
Cuatrocientos |
or ochocientos |
"Eight hundred" |
[SLOW] Ochocientos |
Ochocientos |
Some numbers that are a bit irregular are |
Setecientos |
"Seven hundred" |
[SLOW] Setecientos |
Setecientos |
and novecientos |
"Nine hundred" |
[SLOW] Novecientos |
Novecientos |
They don’t exactly use the words |
Siete |
"Seven" |
[SLOW] Siete |
Siete |
and nueve |
"Nine" |
[SLOW] Nueve |
Nueve |
Finally, the most irregular one, |
Quinientos |
"Five hundred" |
[SLOW] Quinientos |
Quinientos |
sounds completely different than |
Cinco |
"Five" |
[SLOW] Cinco |
Cinco |
and doesn't even end with |
Cientos. |
It’s a very unique number. |
The words for hundreds can be either masculine or feminine, depending on the noun they’re modifying. |
For example, T-shirts is a feminine word in Spanish, so for three hundred T-shirts we would say |
Trescientas camisetas. |
[SLOW] Trescientas camisetas. |
Trescientas camisetas. |
On the other hand, if we were talking about three hundred dishes, we would say |
Trescientos platos. |
[SLOW] Trescientos platos |
Trescientos platos |
You don’t need to worry about its gender if you’re just counting as it doesn’t really relate to any noun. |
Now let’s begin reading numbers from 100 to 1,000 in Spanish: |
Cien |
"One hundred" |
[SLOW] Cien |
Cien |
Ciento uno |
"One hundred one" |
[SLOW] Ciento uno |
Ciento uno |
Ciento dos |
"One hundred two" |
[SLOW] Ciento dos |
Ciento dos |
Ciento tres |
"One hundred three" |
[SLOW] Ciento tres |
Ciento tres |
Ciento diez |
"One hundred ten" |
[SLOW] Ciento diez |
Ciento diez |
