Gina: Hi everyone, I'm Gina.
Lucia: And I'm Lucia!
Gina: And welcome to Culture Class Essential Spanish Vocabulary, Lesson 18! In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to transportation and moving around town. These are five common modes of transportation in Peru, hand picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at SpanishPod101.com.
FIVE KEY VOCABULARY ITEMS
Gina: Lucia, what’s our first word?
Lucia: micro

Gina:
Buses in Peru work a bit differently compared to other countries. They have established routes, but can stop anywhere along the way to pick up a passenger. However, in recent years things have been changing slowly, and more people are respecting the bus stops.
Gina: Now let's hear an example sentence using this word.
Lucia: [normal] Para parar a un micro en Perú se tiene que estirar la mano en la calle.
Gina: In order to stop a bus in Peru, one has to stretch out his hand in the street.
Lucia: [slow] Para parar a un micro en Perú se tiene que estirar la mano en la calle.

Public trains in Peru are a new type of transportation. There is only one line in the capital of Lima that began operation in 2011. The Lima Metro goes from downtown Lima to the district of Villa el Salvador.

Lucia: [normal] Debido a problemas económicos en el país la construcción del tren fue detenida por 20 años y finalizada en el 2011.
Gina: “Due to economic problems in the country, the construction of the train was suspended for 20 years and completed in 2011.”

In Peru, taxis usually have to be yellow, but you can find a lot of taxis of other colors. Yellow taxis are safer, however, because it means they are registered.
Gina: Now let's hear an example sentence using this word.
Lucia: [normal] En Perú no se toman taxis desconocidos de noche.
Gina: “In Peru, don’t take unknown taxis at night.”
Lucia: [slow] En Perú no se toman taxis desconocidos de noche.
Gina: Okay, what’s the next word?

Gina: “shared taxi”

Shared taxis are common in places where buses don't go. They are cheaper than regular taxis and have established routes.
Gina: Now let's hear an example sentence using this word.
Lucia: [normal] Si no conoces la zona, es mejor tomar un taxi y no un taxi colectivo.
Gina: “If you don’t know the area, it’s best to take a taxi and not a shared taxi.”

Small buses called combi operate as public buses. They’re known for travelling faster than buses, but unfortunately, because of this, they’re not as safe.

Gina: “It’s better to take a regular bus than a combi.”
