POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Jessie: Javier, I heard Spain is one of the countries where people work a lot. |
Javier: Well, where people stay at work for a long time, I would say. |
Jessie: How come? Do you have long work schedules in Spain? |
Javier: In many offices and shops yes. Office work begins at 9, people work till 2 PM and instead of having a quick lunch break, many companies take about 2 hour for lunch. |
Jessie: Two hours for lunch. That’s quite long. |
Javier: Yes it is. |
Jessie: And so people go back home for lunch? |
Javier: Some people do but others can’t and eat at the office or in some bar near the area. |
Jessie: And then |
Javier: Then there is another shift from 4 to 7 or 8. |
Jessie: So you work 8 hours as normal but you spend about 10 hours in a job. |
Javier: Yes and if you have to work extra, you might finish quite late. |
Jessie: Yeah. I suppose it would be better to take a short lunch break and finish around 4 or 5 PM so that if you have to do extra hours, you don’t finish work so late. |

POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Jessie: Let’s take a look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first one is |
Javier: escribir |
Jessie: An ir verb meaning to write. Some examples are |
Javier: Yo escribo una carta. |
Jessie: I write a letter. |
Javier: Él escribe en el papel. |
Jessie: He writes on paper. We will talk more about ir verbs later on in this lesson. What’s the next one we will look at? |
Javier: a |
Jessie: To. This is a preposition that shows direction and it actually indicates final destination. However it can have other uses too. |
Javier: Voy a España. |
Jessie: I am going to Spain. |
Javier: Vuelvo a casa. |
Jessie: I am going back home, and the last one. |
Javier: en |
Jessie: This is another Spanish preposition. This preposition shows position. It’s not possible to translate it directly because in English, the preposition will change depending on the situation. It can be equal to on, in or at. |
Javier: Estoy en casa. |
Jessie: I am at home. |
Javier: Vivo en Barcelona. |
Jessie: I live in Barcelona. |
Javier: Está en la mesa. |
Jessie: It’s on the table. Now on to the Grammar Point. |
Lesson focus
|
Jessie: The focus of this lesson is IR verbs in the singular present tense |
Javier: Such as - escribir |
Jessie: To write. As we saw before in Spanish, we can classify the regular verbs into three groups. Verbs that end in AR, verbs that end in ER and verbs that end in IR. The endings of all regular IR verbs conjugate the same way. So that’s what we will look at today. |
Javier: Remember we are looking at the present tense. |
Jessie: Yes the tense used to talk about current actions or habitual actions. |
Javier: Shall we get started. |
Jessie: Sure. Let’s learn how to conjugate IR ending regular verbs in Spanish. We will use the verb - escribir, to write. |
Javier: Yo escribo |
Jessie: I write. |
Javier: Tú escribes |
Jessie: You write. |
Javier: Él escribe |
Jessie: He writes. |
Javier: Nosotros escribimos |
Jessie: We write. |
Javier: Vosotros escribís |
Jessie: You pleural write. |
Javier: Ellos escriben |
Jessie: They write. So as you can see, the only part that’s different is the ending and these endings apply to all IR verbs. Shall we see some common verbs belonging to this group? |
Javier: Sure - vivir |
Jessie: To live |
Javier: abrir |
Jessie: To open |
Javier: recibir |
Jessie: To receive. All right. Now some simple example sentences with IR verbs conjugated. |
Javier: Yo vivo en Sevilla. |
Jessie: I live in Sevilla. |
Javier: Tú escribes una novela. |
Jessie: You write a novel. |
Javier: Ella asiste a una reunión. |
Jessie: She attends a meeting. All right and now some practice. Listeners, listen and repeat. I live. |
Javier: Yo vivo. |
Jessie: You attend |
Javier: Tú asistes |
Jessie: He receives |
Javier: Él recibe |
Jessie: We write |
Javier: Nosotros escribimos |
Jessie: You all live |
Javier: Vosotros vivís |
Jessie: They open |
Javier: Ellos abren |
Jessie: All right. Let’s recap this lesson. We learned about the third group of regular Spanish verbs that end in IR and how to conjugate them in the present simple tense. For example |
Javier: Yo escribo |
Jessie: I write and we also learned some new verbs to practice with. To write |
Javier: escribir |
Jessie: To live |
Javier: vivir |
Jessie: To open |
Javier: abrir |
Jessie: And more. Be sure to read the lesson notes for more info and examples of IR verbs. |
