Gina: Hi everyone, I'm Gina.
Lucia: And I'm Lucia!
Gina: And welcome to Culture Class Essential Spanish Vocabulary, Lesson 11! In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to geography and nature. These are five well-known Peruvian geographical features, hand picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at SpanishPod101.com.

Huascarán is a mountain in the western Andes with the highest point of altitude in the country. It has two peaks with the highest one at 6,768 meters.

The Ballestas islands are small rocky islands near Paracas, in Ica province. They are important because of their marine fauna such as animals like the guano bird, blue-footed booby, Humboldt Penguins, sea lions, fur seals, and others.

Callejón de Huaylas is an inter-Andean valley in the north-central highlands of Peru. It’s located between two mountain ranges forming a unique and beautiful ecosystem with mountains, lakes, rivers, and towns.

The Colca Canyon is located in the province of Arequipa, and is one of the most visited places in Peru. Recent studies show that the canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world.

This is an extensive high plateau located at an altitude of 3,800 meters. It covers the western part of Bolivia, northern Chile, southern Peru, and northwestern Argentina. It’s important because many ancient civilizations of this region started here.
